Kindergarten & 1st Grade
STEM at Experience Academy
Along with our writer's workshop, book clubs, and math class, we are excited to provide new STEM courses that your learners are going to love! We group the incoming kindergarten and 1st grade students, which gives the 1st grade students a chance to show some leadership with our youngest learners. This summer we are planning learning around animal adventures, outdoor adventures, and science exploration. At registration you will be asked to rank the STEM sessions, which helps us to plan for learning that is most exciting to our learners. See the options below to learn more about what we have to offer at Experience Academy.
Animal Adventures:
Could you survive in Antarctica? What if you had fur? Or blubber? Join us for a wild adventure as we study the world around us! In this exciting session we will spend time diving into the animals our students love -- what they are, what they look like, and where they live. We will start to compare and contrast their ecosystems, learning about the adaptations these animals have needed in order to survive. Within this session, we will create a diorama to display all of our learning about our favorite species!
Outdoor Adventurers:
Did you know that we live in an ecosystem? There are so many things in our ecosystem that affect the world around us. In this session we will explore bugs, birds, plants, leaves, and a multitude of other things that show up in the world around us. Within this session, we will create a scientific journal, where we can capture our observations and take note of what we have learned.
Science through Picture Books:
Did you know that there are picture books that can teach us about STEM? This session will combine the study of science and literacy into one fun class! In this session we will learn more about the world around us through the following books:
Boxitects by Kim Smith
Energy - Physical Science for kids by Andi Diehn
Why Should I Walk? I Can Fly! by Ann Ingells
Emma Ren Robot Engineer by Jenny Lu
The Plan for the Gingerbread House by Darcy Pattison
We will use these books as inspiration for architecture, paleontology, engineering, orthology, energy, and more!
Science Exploration:
What is science and how is it different from all of the other things we learn about in school? This session would be an exploration of all things science – what is it, why we learn about it, and how it helps us to understand the world around us. Within this session we will start to explore different sciences. We will explore science and engineering practices and we will even start to ask questions, develop hypotheses, collect data, and draw conclusions, all within a scientific journal.
