What Makes Us Different

At Avenon Academy we take the old adage, "It takes a village to raise a child" to heart and we don't forget that children themselves are members of the village that raises them.

This 'village' is not just the narrow idea of an in-school learning community.  Our notion of village extends out to parents, families, young adult mentors, and professionals.  Generally an untapped asset in the education of our children, these community members can provide a powerful force to guide and support children's development.

We look to engage this broader village by providing meaningful involvement for parents and community members with frequent and transparent communication and opportunities to interact such as team building  presentations, group leadership, mentoring, and explorations.  We also help children  develop their social and emotional skills to foster respectful and rewarding interactions.

As members of their village, we believe children must have responsibilities and actively support their communities.  We cultivate these qualities through program design, role playing, job assignments, and other activities.  In this modern world, no village stands alone, each local community is part of a larger whole.  We encourage children to engage as responsible citizens of their broader society, faith and cultural groups, and the global environment.

Hence, the "village", in its comprehensive sense, is an essential component of our instructional school model. We value and welcome the experience, take advantage of the wealth of resources, and foster the involvement of our families, community members, and the broader society in enriching our students' learning experience.

Educational Philosophy

Traditional learning models focus on interactions between teachers, curriculum, and students. Avenon Academy bases its pedagogical framework on developing and nurturing the relationships among 4 pillars: curriculum, students, teachers, and community. We call this framerwork our Pedagogical Diamond. Students, teachers, and community partners all impact the school's curriculum, ensuring that it is rich, hands-on, engaging, rigorous, and is promoting student choice, authenticity, productive collaboration, advocacy of self and others.
